On August 3rd, 1815, six and a half weeks after Waterloo, Louis XVIII issued the decree for the dissolution of the Garde Impériale. This was quickly followed by the Royal Ordonnance of August 15th that set in place the "retirement criteria" for Bonapartist officers in the army. In October two special commissions convened and carefully reviewed the conduct of the officer corps from March 20th, 1815 until Waterloo. In 1816, 20,000 officers had been effectively "retired" and reduced to "half-pay" status. And so the demi-soldes came to be . . . and accompanied their Empereur into posterity and legend.

At that moment, deep and lasting regrets filled my soul, my ears still echoing from the din of battle, I retreated into the past in an effort to commemorate its glory. De Segur, Mémoires
